چکیده

Developing self-stabilizing solutions is considered to be more challenging and complicated than developing classical solutions, where a proper initialization of the variables can be assumed. Hence, to ease the task of the developers, some automatic techniques have been proposed to design self-stabilizing algorithms. In this paper, we propose an automatic transformer for algorithms in an extended population protocol model. Population protocols is a model that was introduced recently for networks with a large number of resource-limited mobile agents. We use a variant of this model. First, we assume agents having characteristics (e.g., moving speed, communication radius) affecting their intercommunication ‘‘speed’’, which is reflected by their cover times. Second, we assume the existence of a special agentwith an unboundedmemory, the base station. The automatic transformer takes as an input an algorithm solving a static problem (and meeting some additional rather natural requirements) and outputs a self-stabilizing algorithm for the same problem. The transformer is built using a re-execution approach (the technique consisting of executing an algorithm repeatedly in order to obtain its self-stabilizing version). We show that in the model we use, a transformer based on such an approach is impossible without the assumption of an unbounded memory agent. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Enabling Snap-Stabilization

A snap-stabilizing protocol guarantees that the system always behaves according to its specification provided some processor initiated the protocol. We present how to snap-stabilize some important protocols, like Leader Election, Reset, Snapshot, and Termination Detection. We use a Snap-stabilizing Propagation of Information with Feedback protocol for arbitrary networks as the key module in the...

Self-stabilizing Mutual Exclusion and Group Mutual Exclusion for Population Protocols with Covering

This paper presents and proves correct two self-stabilizing deterministic algorithms solving the mutual exclusion and the group mutual exclusion problems in the model of population protocols with covering. In this variant of the population protocol model, a local fairness is used and bounded state anonymous mobile agents interact in pairs according to constraints expressed in terms of their cov...

The Local Detection Paradigm for Self Stabilization

A new paradigm for the design of self-stabilizing distributed algorithms, called local detection, is introduced. The paradigm is to de ne a condition that each node can check locally, such that the condition holds for every node in its immediate neighborhood if and only if the system is in a globally legal state. Following our preliminary presentation [AKY90], this paradigm has been widely used...

The expressive power of snap-stabilization

A snap-stabilizing algorithm, regardless of the initial configuration of the system, guarantees that it always behaves according to its specification. We consider here the locally shared memory model. In this model, we propose the first snap-stabilizing Propagation of Information with Feedback (PIF) algorithm for rooted networks of arbitrary connected topology which is proven assuming the distr...
